Homework 1

Thermodynamics

Due on Thursday, April 9th, 2009.

Problem set

1) Read Chapter 1 of Cotton's notes ("Cloud dynamics"). Pay attention to
(a) physics behind each cloud type (b) the role of cloud type on
climate system (c) characteristic time and length scale (d) try to
understand micophysical composition of each cloud system (Cu, Cu
congestus, singlecell thunderstorm, cloud clusters, MCC, MCS, Ci,
Ac).

For each cloud type discussed in the text (i.e. Cu, towering Cu, Cb,
MCS/MCC, Ac, Ci, Sc, fog) provide short description of the following
properties

cloud morphology
vertical cloud scale
hoizontal cloud scale
lagrangian time
total life time
typical vertical velocity
liquid or ice water content
typical droplet/ice crystal sizes
precipitation type (convective, stratified)
the role of Coriolis effect (Earth's rotation)
horizontal cloud cover in tropics, mid-lattitudes, polar regions
influence on solar radiation (cloud cover, role of vertical cloud
extend, role of cloud microphysics)
influence on infrared radiation (cloud cover, role of height, role of
cloud microphysics)
climate effect at the surface, atmosphere, top of the atmosphere
severe weather effects
interaction with aerosols
effects on pollution

Email to me your answer (tekst file)

2) Examine in detail the skewT mastery software (and read Chapter 2
of Cotton's notes on thermodynamics to get more background). When you
traverse the skewT mastery software there are test questions (for
example - determine saturated mixing ratio, etc). Answer these
question and email to me the total number of questions you answered
and amount of questions you answered correctly the first time.

Using the skewT mastery software display current sounding and plot
this sounding on the skewT - logp diagram I provided in class.
Calculate LCL based on 1000mb parcel. Do not email to me an answer to
this question. I will look over the plots during the next class.
